Morocco in Winter: Weather, Routes and What to Pack
Winter is one of the best seasons for southern Morocco and the Sahara, but it is not uniformly warm. Clear desert days, cold nights, mountain snow and cool riad interiors can all belong to the same trip.
The short answer
December to February suits Marrakech, the Draa Valley and Sahara when you pack warm layers for night. The Atlantic remains useful but can be windy or wet. High Atlas snow and pass conditions require flexible routing and current checks.
What winter actually feels like
Sun can make a desert afternoon feel warm, then the temperature can fall quickly after sunset. Shade, stone and earthen interiors also hold cold.
Pack for temperature range rather than one daily average.
Marrakech and imperial cities
Winter supports longer daytime walks without summer heat. Mornings, nights and shaded lanes feel cool, with rain possible.
Confirm heating in your room or riad; decorative fireplaces are not proof of practical warmth.
The Sahara in winter
Cooler days suit camel trekking, dune walking and off-road travel. Camps still need careful comfort checks.
Ask about bedding, tent heating, private or shared bathrooms and the distance between tent and facilities.
Atlas Mountains and road conditions
Snow affects higher paths and can affect passes. A city forecast does not describe the mountain crossing.
Use qualified local guidance for hikes and keep an alternative if conditions change.
The Atlantic coast
Essaouira and Agadir can make a balanced winter finish. Wind, rain and cool evenings remain possible.
Choose the coast for atmosphere and pacing rather than a guaranteed beach-weather promise.
A strong winter route
Combine Marrakech, Aït Ben Haddou, Draa Valley, M’hamid and two desert-region nights, then return with a margin before departure.
If mountain weather becomes uncertain, a private route should adapt stops and timing rather than force the original schedule.
Winter packing
Use breathable day layers, an insulating jacket, warm sleepwear, closed shoes and rain protection. Sun protection remains necessary.
For remote stages, keep medicine and a warm layer in the small bag that stays with you.
