Eight days is what it takes to walk in the High Atlas and still reach the Sahara without the two halves spoiling each other. The shape does the work: days one and two are on foot with little or no driving, day three crosses the mountains, and by day five you are off-road into Erg Chigaga with a full desert day after it. The trade is the road either side — day four is long, and day eight brings you back from Foum Zguid in five to six hours. If you want the walking without the drive, the five-day Atlas valleys route stays in the mountains; if you want the desert without the altitude, the four-day Chigaga run gets you there sooner. Erg Chigaga and Lake Iriki are not new ground for us. My parents crossed them with the herds, and so did my grandfather on my mother’s side.

Enter the Draa Valley through Agdz and follow the oasis south.

Following the full ecological transition from palms and farms to the desert gateway.

Travel north through Taznakht and toward Ouarzazate.
