A direct four-day private route across the High Atlas and Draa Valley to remote Erg Chigaga, returning through Lake Iriki and Foum Zguid.

What the four-day version involves
Four days reaches the dunes, but the drives are real.
Four days is the shortest honest route to Erg Chigaga. It works because the driving sits on days one, two and four, which leaves day three almost entirely in the desert — the crossing from M’hamid is about two hours off-road, and nothing else is scheduled against it. The trade is the last day: the longest of the route, the Iriki piste first and then the Tichka, roughly nine hours from camp back to Marrakech. If reading that makes you hesitate, the six-day route breaks the same journey over two extra nights, and we would rather you took it. Erg Chigaga and Lake Iriki are not new ground for us. My parents crossed them with the herds, and so did my grandfather on my mother’s side.

Your route
Four demanding but workable days.
Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate area
Leave Marrakech with a private driver and climb into the High Atlas. The road crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with stops chosen for the conditions and the interests of your party rather than a fixed shopping circuit.
Continue to the fortified ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. Time here is reserved for walking through the earthen settlement and understanding why this valley controlled an old trans-Saharan route.
Travel onward toward Ouarzazate and settle on the southern side of the Atlas, ready for the Draa Valley the next morning.

The Tizi n’Tichka road is winding. Tell us in advance about motion sickness, mobility needs or a preference for more frequent stops.
Ouarzazate area → Agdz → Draa Valley → Zagora → M’hamid El Ghizlane
Turn southeast toward Agdz and enter the Draa Valley, where date palms, cultivated plots and earthen villages follow the river corridor toward the Sahara.
Pause along the valley for lunch and a closer look at oasis life. The exact stop is selected according to opening conditions and the pace agreed for the journey.
Continue through Zagora and Tamgroute country to M’hamid El Ghizlane, the final oasis settlement before the open desert and the starting point for Chigaga expeditions.

Arrive in M’hamid, settle in and review the following day’s off-road plan with the local team.

This day covers a long north-to-south distance. Stops are paced realistically; adding a rest night is possible for families or travellers who prefer shorter days.
M’hamid → desert piste → Erg Chigaga
Begin in M’hamid with time to prepare a small overnight bag and confirm the desert conditions. Large luggage can be managed according to the vehicle and camp arrangements stated in your proposal.
Leave the paved road in a suitable 4×4 with an experienced local driver. The track crosses changing hammada, sand and open desert terrain; stops depend on heat, wind and track conditions.
Reach the Erg Chigaga dune area and continue to the selected camp. A camel ride can be timed toward sunset when it forms part of the confirmed program.
The transition from M’hamid’s last oasis to the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, reached only across desert tracks.
Watch the light change over the dunes, then return to camp for dinner. Music or time around the fire is included only when confirmed for the chosen camp and season.

Dinner and breakfast are normally part of the camp arrangement; the final proposal confirms lunch and drinks.

Desert temperatures fall quickly after sunset, especially in winter. Bring closed shoes, sun protection and a warm layer. The driver may alter the piste when conditions require it.
Erg Chigaga → Lake Iriki → Foum Zguid → Taznakht → Marrakech
Rise for the desert morning if you wish, have breakfast and leave camp by 4×4. Cross west toward the dry Lake Iriki landscape rather than returning along the same track to M’hamid.
Reach Foum Zguid and rejoin the paved road. Continue through the Anti-Atlas corridor toward Taznakht, with a lunch stop arranged around the day’s progress.
Travel north toward Ouarzazate and cross the High Atlas back to Marrakech. Arrival time depends on road, weather and the number of agreed stops.
A complete desert loop across Lake Iriki, linking the Chigaga dunes with Foum Zguid instead of retracing the outward route.
Arrive in Marrakech and finish at the agreed accommodation or drop-off point. An additional Marrakech night is recommended when your onward travel would otherwise be too tight.

Not included after the agreed Marrakech drop-off unless an extra night is added to the itinerary.
