Erg Chigaga Travel Guide: Tours, Camps & Access
Erg Chigaga (also spelled Erg Chegaga) is the remote dune region southwest of M’hamid El Ghizlane. Reaching it is part of the experience: the paved road ends before the dunes, and the final approach crosses open hammada and desert tracks with a local 4×4 driver.

Chigaga suits travelers who value distance, open horizons and a desert setting with less roadside development. It is not a single fenced attraction: camps sit in different parts of a broad Saharan landscape, so location, tent standard and transfer arrangements must be confirmed rather than assumed.
From M’hamid, the off-road journey commonly takes around two hours, depending on the camp, track and conditions. A return can follow the same route or continue across Lake Iriki toward Foum Zguid, creating a useful southern loop rather than retracing the Draa Valley.

What is worth your time around Erg Chigaga
Cross the open desert by 4×4
Leave the asphalt beyond M’hamid and watch palm country give way to stony plateau, tamarisk and sand. Track choice changes with wind and surface conditions.
Walk the dunes at sunset
Allow time to climb on foot rather than arriving only for a photograph. The scale becomes clearer from the dune ridges as the light softens.
Spend a full desert day
Two nights create time for a slow morning, a short walk, tea or lunch in shade and a second sunset without repeating the arrival schedule.
Continue through Lake Iriki
The dry-lake route toward Foum Zguid adds changing desert terrain and works well when the onward journey returns toward Marrakech via Taznakht.

Autumn and spring
Generally the most comfortable balance of warm days and manageable nights. Wind and sand are still possible.
Winter
Clear days can feel pleasant, but nights and early mornings are cold. Bring proper layers rather than relying on camp blankets alone.
Summer
Extreme heat makes routine sightseeing and exposed activities unsuitable. Any summer plan requires conservative timing and local operational advice.

Chigaga is strongest in a four-day-or-longer Marrakech route through Aït Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley and M’hamid. It can also anchor a camel trek from M’hamid or a longer southern crossing toward Foum Zguid and Taroudant.

Can a normal car reach Erg Chigaga?
No. The final approach is off-road and requires a suitable vehicle with a driver familiar with current tracks.
Is one night enough?
One night gives a sunset, camp evening and sunrise. Two nights are better when you want quiet time rather than spending most of the visit arriving and leaving.
Is Erg Chigaga the same as Merzouga?
No. Chigaga is reached off-road from M’hamid; Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi and has paved access. They create different route and atmosphere choices.
