Why visit Fes

What this place is really like

Fes is best understood through Fes el-Bali, a vast living medina whose homes, religious institutions, markets and workshops developed around two historic riverbanks. UNESCO recognizes the medina for its exceptional urban and cultural heritage, but its value is not confined to individual monuments.

The city can overwhelm when approached as a shopping maze. A well-briefed guide should explain urban structure, architecture, education and craft while respecting clear limits on retail stops. After that introduction, selected courtyards, gardens and viewpoints can be explored at a slower pace.

Fes is also northern Morocco’s route hinge. It connects by rail with other imperial cities, by road with Chefchaouen and Volubilis, and south through the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley toward Merzouga. Those onward distances should be planned as full travel stages.

Make the visit count

Best things to do in Fes.

01

Begin with an informed medina walk

Set priorities before entering: architecture, history, food, craft, photography or orientation. Agree explicitly whether shopping is welcome so the route serves the traveler rather than a commission pattern.

02

See craft as living work

Observe workshops without blocking production and ask how materials, labor and sales relate. Tanneries, metalwork, wood and textiles need context, respectful photography and honest discussion of what is locally made.

03

Select monuments instead of collecting them

Opening access changes, and some religious buildings are not open to non-Muslims. Choose a small number of appropriate madrasas, museums, gardens or courtyards and verify current entry locally.

04

Use viewpoints to understand the whole city

A panoramic stop before or after the medina can show walls, density and surrounding hills. It is most useful when tied back to the neighborhoods walked below.

Weather and timing

Choose the season around the experience.

March–May

Spring is popular for long medina walks and wider northern routes. Book experienced guides and well-located stays early.

September–November

Autumn often brings warm, manageable walking conditions, with cooler evenings later in the season.

December–February

Winter can be cool and rainy; shaded lanes and riad interiors feel colder than midday sunshine. Confirm room heating.

June–August

Summer heat makes early starts and a midday rest important. Accommodation cooling and vehicle access deserve more attention than adding extra visits.

Build a realistic route

How to include this destination.

Route fit

Route fit

Allow at least two full city days, ideally within a three-night stay. Add Chefchaouen or Volubilis only with a realistic extra day. The road to Merzouga is long even when broken by Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley stops, so do not combine a full Fes visit with the desert transfer on the same day.

Accommodation

Accommodation

A medina riad offers atmosphere and pedestrian access but may require porterage, stairs and careful navigation. Staying near a gate can reduce walking; Ville Nouvelle hotels simplify vehicles, lifts and larger rooms. Confirm the exact drop-off, distance on foot, stair count, heating or cooling and whether restaurant service is available on arrival night.

Destination questions

What travelers ask before going

Do I need a guide in Fes?

A knowledgeable, well-briefed guide is very useful for a first medina day. You can then revisit selected areas independently once the city’s structure is clearer.

How many days should I spend in Fes?

Two full days suit a first visit; three allow a slower pace, food or craft focus, or a nearby excursion without compressing the medina.

Should I stay inside the medina?

Choose the medina for atmosphere and walking access; choose near a gate or in Ville Nouvelle for easier vehicles, lifts and mobility. The right option depends on luggage and comfort needs.

Can I travel from Fes to Merzouga in one day?

Yes by road, but it is a long stage. Protect realistic breaks and do not schedule a major Fes visit or sunset-dependent desert activity around an optimistic arrival.
