Morocco’s tallest dunes, its most recognisable desert, and the easiest stretch of Sahara to reach from Marrakech or Fes.
A wall of sand in the middle of flat ground
Erg Chebbi is not what most people expect. There is no gradual build-up — you drive across flat, stony hammada for hours, and then a 150-metre ridge of orange sand simply appears, twenty-two kilometres long and five wide, with nothing around it.
Merzouga is the village at its edge: a low sprawl of guesthouses, a couple of cafes, and the point where the tarmac stops and the sand begins.
Caravans, fossils and a seabed
This corner of Morocco was ocean floor 400 million years ago, which is why the black desert north of the dunes is littered with trilobites and ammonites. Later it became the last watering point on the caravan routes running north from the Sahel.
The Gnaoua community at Khamlia, a few kilometres south, descends from West Africans brought north on those caravans. Their music is still played there most afternoons.

Whose desert this is
Merzouga is Amazigh country, and Tamazight is the first language for most people you will meet, with Arabic and French close behind. Hospitality here is not a service standard. Refusing the third glass of mint tea is mildly rude, and you will be offered it everywhere.
Things we tell every traveller
- Climb the dune the evening before — you will find it faster in the dark at 5am
- Closed shoes, not sandals. Sand at midday burns.
- Bring a scarf. Wind picks up most afternoons.
- Cash for the village, the nearest ATM is in Rissani
- Charge everything at camp while the sun is up

Merzouga FAQs
It is roughly nine hours by road, which is why almost everyone breaks it over two days. Our tours stop overnight in the Dades Valley. There is also a small airport at Errachidia, about two hours north, and an overnight bus if you are travelling on a budget.
The tallest reach about 150 metres, which is high enough that climbing one before sunrise is genuinely hard work in soft sand. Allow twenty minutes and wear closed shoes.
You can, but July and August regularly pass 45°C during the day. If summer is your only option, we shift the schedule — dunes at dawn and dusk, shade and rest in the middle of the day.
Patchy. Most networks give you a bar or two on the dune tops and nothing in the hollows. There is solar power for charging, and we carry a satellite phone for emergencies.
