Dades and Todra are two distinct valleys on the eastern route between Ouarzazate and Erg Chebbi. Dades unfolds through cultivated areas, villages, rock formations and a winding upper road; Todra narrows into high limestone walls near Tinghir before opening toward mountain paths.
Many fast desert tours pause only at a road viewpoint and the busiest entrance to Todra. A better visit uses one overnight, a short guided walk and quieter hours, allowing the gardens, water systems and lived-in valleys to carry as much importance as the canyon walls.
The overnight choice changes the next day. A Dades stay favors the scenic valley road and Valley of Roses connection; a Tinghir or Todra stay places travelers closer to the gorge and the onward eastern route. Two nights are justified when walking is a central interest.

Treat the valley as a sequence of landscapes rather than one viewpoint. Stop where it is safe, allow time for villages and avoid standing in the carriageway for photographs.
Walk from Todra into the landscape
Move beyond the roadside canyon entrance on a route suited to the group. A local guide can connect the gorge with palm gardens, village paths or longer mountain terrain.
Understand oasis agriculture
Guided garden walks reveal irrigation, small fields and the relationship between settlement and river water. Remain on accepted paths and do not enter cultivated plots without permission.
Choose one unhurried overnight
Evening and morning reduce traffic pressure and make space for a real walk. Pick Dades or Todra according to the next day rather than trying to sleep ‘between’ both without a plan.

Which is better: Dades or Todra?
Dades suits a scenic valley drive and varied overnight landscape; Todra suits a focused canyon and garden walk. Many routes include both, but they are not interchangeable.
Can I see both valleys in one day?
Yes on a through-route, but meaningful walking is limited. One overnight is the minimum for a balanced visit; two are better for walkers.
Where should I stay?
Choose Dades if the upper valley and scenic road are priorities; choose Tinghir or Todra for easier gorge access and the onward route toward Merzouga.
Are the gorges close to Merzouga?
They form part of the western approach to Erg Chebbi, but the journey still requires substantial road time. Do not plan a full gorge walk and an early dune arrival without checking the day carefully.
