M’hamid El Ghizlane: Gateway to Morocco’s Wild Sahara
M’hamid is not simply the final fuel stop before Erg Chigaga. It is the point where the Draa Valley’s settled oasis landscape gives way to desert tracks, camel routes and remote camps.
The short answer
M’hamid is the practical base for Erg Lihoudi, supported camel treks and the 4×4 crossing to Erg Chigaga. Staying here separates a long paved journey from the remote-desert stage and gives the local team time to prepare vehicles, luggage, water and camp arrangements.
Where the road changes character
The paved southern route follows the Draa Valley through Zagora and reaches M’hamid near the end of the settled oasis corridor. Beyond town, movement depends on desert tracks and current conditions.
That transition makes M’hamid a planning hinge. It is where a road itinerary becomes a remote-area operation.
Erg Lihoudi and Erg Chigaga are different trips
Erg Lihoudi is about seven kilometres from M’hamid and suits a shorter dune stay. Erg Chigaga lies much farther across desert terrain and normally takes around two hours by 4×4.
Travelers should not book a vague ‘M’hamid desert’ product without knowing which dune area and camp are included.
Why an overnight can improve the route
Arriving, transferring off-road and reaching sunset on the same day creates pressure after a long road journey. An overnight in or near M’hamid allows a calmer start, especially for families and winter arrivals.
It also creates space to confirm weather, repack a smaller bag and discuss the next stage with the local team.
Starting a camel trek
Supported treks require more than a camel ride. Route, walking time, water, meals, bedding, luggage limits, guide support and emergency arrangements need to be clear.
M’hamid is a practical meeting point for those preparations and for adapting the first stage to the group.
Local life beyond the departure
M’hamid deserves respectful attention as a living oasis community, not a themed gateway. Market rhythms, gardens and settlements are part of the region’s story.
Ask before photographing people or private spaces, and use local hosts and guides who can explain access without turning daily life into a performance.
Building M’hamid into a wider route
The strongest southern journey arrives through Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley, then continues to Chigaga and exits by M’hamid or Lake Iriki and Foum Zguid.
The right direction depends on total days, season and where you travel next.

Can I exit Chigaga toward Foum Zguid?
