Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga: Which Sahara Desert Should You Choose?
Both dune regions can anchor a meaningful Sahara journey, but they create different routes. Compare access, landscape, camp choice, off-road time and the rest of your Morocco itinerary before deciding.
The short answer
Choose Erg Chigaga for a remote off-road approach from M’hamid and a route through the Draa Valley and Lake Iriki. Choose Merzouga for paved dune-edge access and a natural connection between Fes, the Middle Atlas, Dades and Marrakech. Neither is a good quick side trip from Marrakech.
The difference is access, not a beauty contest
Erg Chebbi’s dunes rise beside settlements around Merzouga, so vehicles can reach the dune edge on paved roads. Erg Chigaga lies beyond M’hamid and requires a desert-track crossing by suitable 4×4. That approach is part of the Chigaga experience rather than an inconvenience to hide.
The right choice depends on the larger journey. A desert should connect logically to the places before and after it.
What Erg Chigaga feels like
The Chigaga route moves gradually from the Draa Valley and M’hamid into hammada, open plains and dunes. The final approach takes roughly two hours off-road from M’hamid, depending on track, sand, weather and stops.
It suits travelers who value remoteness, a complete 4×4 crossing and the possibility of exiting toward Lake Iriki and Foum Zguid. Camp standards vary, so remoteness should never be treated as proof of luxury.
What Merzouga and Erg Chebbi feel like
Merzouga offers easier access, a broad selection of accommodation and a recognizable wall of dunes close to the villages. It fits naturally on a Fes-to-Marrakech or Marrakech-to-Fes circuit through the Middle Atlas and Dades region.
Greater access also means more visible tourism activity. A careful camp and timing choice can still create quiet, but the planning challenge differs from Chigaga.
Route time from Marrakech
A responsible Marrakech–Sahara plan normally gives either dune region at least four days for the return journey, and more when possible. Three-day trips exist, but long road stages dominate the experience.
For Chigaga, the southern axis is Marrakech, Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, Draa Valley, M’hamid and the dunes. For Merzouga, the common axis runs through Ouarzazate, Dades and Todra.
Camps, camel rides and comfort
Ask for the camp name, location, tent type, bed arrangement, electricity and bathroom setup in writing. ‘Luxury’ is not a universal standard in either desert.
Camel rides should be matched to ability and conditions. A shorter sunset outing is different from a supported multi-day trek; confirm which one is actually included.
Our local recommendation
If the journey already uses the Draa Valley or you want a strong off-road element, Chigaga is usually the coherent choice. If you are connecting Fes and Marrakech or need easier dune access, Merzouga may make the route more balanced.
Do not choose only from photographs. Choose the desert that reduces backtracking and gives you enough time after arrival.

- Avoid a same-day flight after a long desert return.
- Tell the planner about motion sickness, mobility or heat sensitivity.
Questions about Erg Chigaga and Merzouga
Which desert is more remote?
Erg Chigaga requires an off-road crossing from M’hamid and generally feels more remote.
Which is easier with children?
Merzouga has easier road access, but a well-paced M’hamid and Chigaga plan can also work. Age, heat and drive tolerance matter.
Can I do Chigaga in three days from Marrakech?
It is physically possible in some formats but creates very long days. Four days is a more honest minimum for the route.
Is Agafay the Sahara?
No. Agafay is a rocky landscape near Marrakech, useful for a short escape but not a substitute for Saharan dunes.
